Keeping Kids Healthy During Flu Season

IT'S FLU SEASON!  The time of year that we have to work a little harder to keep our family healthy.

"With fall and winter quickly approaching, keeping our children healthy and minimizing the impact of cold and flu season is top of mind. Germs can spread easily when kids are in school sharing lunches and school supplies, playing with friends, and participating in extracurricular activities. It’s important to keep your kids healthy so they can stay active, alert and not miss any school. The experts at Lysol recommend getting a flu shot, washing your hands with soap and water and scrub thoroughly for 20 seconds, and routinely clean and disinfect surfaces to help stop the spread of germs. Lysol Spray and Lysol Wipes kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on hard non porous surfaces."

We choose NOT to give our kids the flu shot.  Hubby, the kids and I have NEVER gotten a flu shot of any kind.  No plans to start either!   It's a personal choice and one that each family has to make individually.

I know there are people out there that don't agree with our decision not to vaccinate our children against the flu. That's fine with me, it's a personal choice that we all have to make. What's right for our family isn't right for everyone's and vice-versa. I am confident in the choice that my husband and I have made for our family. We have never made our decisions based on what someone else thinks we should do when it comes to our children.

I think it's all about eating healthy, getting enough sleep and washing your hands and covering your coughs/sneezes. I'll admit that I'm a little more cautious during flu season with my children. I've sent them both a bottle of hand sanitizer to keep in their desks, a small bottle in their backpack and I'm keeping a bottle in the pickup and in my purse as well.

I also give my kids a multi-vitamin each morning with their breakfast. In addition, last week I started giving them each a cup of Emergen-C each day and will continue to do so throughout the winter. I did this last winter as well.  Emergen-C Kidz is so fun, fizzy and tasty - the kids love it. It also contains 24 vitamins and nutrients, including 500 mg of Vitamin C.

We must be doing something right, my son is in 5th grade and has never missed a day of school! My daughter is in 2nd grade and I'm hoping for the same results with her. So far so good!

What steps to you take to keep your kids healthy during flu season?
