Dog Days of Summer - Dog Care Tips!

I've always been a pet lover, growing up, we always had a dog (or two).  We currently have two big dogs, both mastiffs, that are almost as spoiled as my children are.  Our dogs are not just pets, they are a part of our family.  Keeping our dogs happy, safe and healthy is as important as my family's well-being.
My top tips for dog health, safety, and training:

Making sure my pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations is one of our top concerns.  In addition to making sure that they are free of any other common issues that can affect them, such as fleas and ticks.
Having a fenced yard helps keep your dog, and people passing by both safe and out of harms way.  Even if your dog is friendly, many people are afraid of dogs - so keeping your dog in your yard is best for everyone!
Walk your dog, but keep them on a leash!  Dogs need exercise, and going for a walk is the perfect activity!
Be sure not to walk them on hot surfaces, if it is too hot for you to walk barefoot, then chances are that it is too hot for your dog!
Never leave your dog in the car unattended on hot days. Even with the windows open, temperatures in cars WILL reach deadly levels.
Also, don't leave your dog outside on hot days for too long either, let them into the house where it is cool and comfortable.

Make sure your dog ALWAYS has enough food and fresh water!
Socialize your dog, making sure that they are kind and friendly towards others is crucial!  You don't want your dog to be afraid of or mean to people outside of your family.

Pet and talk to your dog daily!  Show them that you love them, and they will love you too!

Provide a soft, comfortable pet bed for your dog to sleep on.
Our dogs are heavy, and it's very important that they have something soft to sleep on, otherwise their legs fall asleep.  Pet beds, blankets and even pillows work perfectly.

Even if your dog spends little time outside, a good doghouse should be provided for a warm, dry shelter from rain and also to protect from excessive cold or heat.
Teach your dog the basics, good manners is a must!  My dogs know how to sit, come, stay, lay down, fetch and shake!  They also know what the words "treat," "no," and "drop it" mean!

Being a responsible dog owner might not always be easy, but it is very rewarding.  I can't imagine our life without our dogs!

Are you a dog or a cat person?

This post is brought to you as a part of the Dog Days of Summer Campaign, hosted by the folks at dog training collars. In the hopes that all our canine companions, also known as "man's best friend" have a wonderful summer, we are sharing our favorite doggy-tips!

  1. These are such great tips! We have a dog and a cat! It irks me when I see people leaving their pets outside too long on a hot day.

  2. Your reminder about not walking them on hot surfaces (too hot for us) is such a good one. I don't have a pet, but I might not have thought about that!

  3. Great reminders for treating our four-legged friends right as the weather turns hot.

  4. I do not have any pets, but it makes me so sad to see pets left outside here all day in the desert. TOO HOT!
