My Nutrisystem Weight Loss Journey: Week 27

Whether you're a child or an adult, little rewards or incentives really can make a difference and boost your attitude.  I'm a firm believer that the little things are what matter most.  For every 10 pounds you lose on Nutrisystem, they send you a cute, colorful little bear to help celebrate your weight loss success!  How fun is that?

Each new day is an opportunity to improve, and to learn from our mistakes.  There are days when I just can't seem to find the energy to workout, and there are days when all I crave is chocolate and fast food.  What I choose to do about it will either make me or break me!

One of the many things that I have learned while on Nutrisystem is that I'm in control at all times.  It's up to me to choose whether or not to stick to my weight loss plan, or to take the path that I was following before.  

At the end of the day... I'm the one that decided what to eat and what not to eat, and it's up to me whether I fail or succeed!

Last week, as I was making my children's lunches for school, I realized that I had ran out of things to put into them.  Luckily I managed to find enough food for that day, but knew that I desperately needed to make a trip to the store.

I had recently won a $100 Kmart gift card in an online sweepstakes and a $15 Sears gift card, so I decided to make a trip to Kmart and see exactly how much I could get with the money that I had.  It just made more sense to use the gift cards to purchase practical items, like groceries and other household items that we use regularly.

I had never purchased grocery items at Kmart before, so I really don't know what to expect.  But, I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised by their selection, sales and prices - and with the amount I purchased for so little.

Saving Money on Groceries

 

There are many ways that you can save money on the food you buy every week. Some of these ways are commonly known, like coupons, but others are less known. Here are some ways that I have found to save money on my groceries every month:

1. Buy in bulk – One good way to cut down on your prices at the store is to buy in bulk. Things that you use a lot of or that do not expire can be bought for much cheaper at places like Sam’s Club or Costco. I buy my toilet paper, canned goods and other products I use a lot of there and end up saving a bunch, despite the cost of a membership.
2. Watch the ads – Every week I get ads to my local stores in my mailbox. These ads feature the best sales that the stores will have on that week. By looking at the ads I can see which store I should shop at and what sort of products I can purchase for cheap. Some stores, like Wal-Mart, let you show them and ad and you can pay that price at their store even if their product is not on sale.
3. Plan your meals – As part of looking at ads I also plan my meals around what is affordable. By planning your meals and shopping for the week you cut down on extravagant purchases and make sure what you buy does not go bad. You also eat healthier because you do not resort to fast food when you are tired.
4. Cut down on meat –Last but not least you can cut down on how much meat your family eats. Meat if often the most expensive part of a meal. However you can stretch the meat by adding things like rice and pasta. This will allow you to use less meat for the same meal and also makes your family eat healthier.

These are just a few ways I have been able to reduce my grocery expenses each month. There are many more ways you and your family can live frugally and still enjoy the same things.

For the past five years, I've been able to completely fund our family summer vacation with my online earnings!  By earning money online, I'm able to pay for 100% of our transportation, lodging, food and entertainment for our family of four.  Three summers ago, we spent 10 days on the Oregon Coast.  Last summer we spent a week at the West Edmonton Mall in Canada, and this summer we will be renting an oceanfront beach house on the Oregon Coast for an entire week.

I've always been a stay at home mom and have zero regrets. My husband and I sat down and discussed all the options, this was the only way to go for us.   Figuring out my salary for working, gas to and from work and other work related expenses... almost my entire paycheck would go to someone else to take care of my children. It just wasn't worth it! 

There are several websites where I earn money online - cash, gift cards, giveaways and freebies.  All of which make things stretch further for my family and really make a difference. I use many of my wins and freebies for gift giving. They make the perfect gifts and that's zero money out of my pocket for presents! I also cash in for gift cards that enable me to take the kids to the movies and do extra things for fun.  Also free for us!

I use coupons as often as I can and combine them with sales and clearance. Last September, the small bags of Goldfish crackers were on sale at Albertson's for $1 and I had (74) $1/1 Goldfish cracker coupons. I got 74 bags for $4.44 - all I had to pay was the sales tax!
 
I buy all of my kids clothes on clearance and off season for the next year. I got winter coats a couple weeks ago, and paid just $12 each. They were normally priced at $90 and $120 each.  

I also sell lots of clothes, toys, and other items that the kids no longer use, need or can wear on Craigslist or Shop N' Swap.

My Nutrisystem Weight Loss Journey: Week 24

About two and a half months ago I had to make a very hard decision.  I took off my wedding ring and put it into our safe.  To be completely honest... I've been lost without it!  Last week I decided that it was finally time to take it to the jeweler to get re-sized, so that I can finally wear it again.  My wedding ring had to be sized down from a size 9 to a 7!

The Biggest Loser started again this week, and I'm watching!  The show always seems to come at the perfect time, giving me an extra kick (and motivation) that I need to stay focused and on track!  Watching their workouts, hearing their stories, and seeing them prove that you can do it - no matter who you are.
