Are You Ready to "Mangover Your Plate"? (Giveaway)

Fresh fruit is part of our daily diet year-round, and something that my children ask for on a daily basis.  Everything from the basics such as apples and bananas - to the more exotic and tropical pineapples and mangos!

I was recently invited to take part in a briefing hosted by The Motherhood and The National Mango Board where I learned everything there is to know about mangos, from picking them out at the grocery store, how to cut them, and how to create delicious dishes with them at home.  The Motherhood teamed up with the National Mango Board to share the ultimate secret weapon against food boredom – mangos!

We love the sweet, tropical flavor of mangos and their ability to transform any dish – whether it’s breakfast or a midnight snack. Not only are they delicious, they are packed with more than 20 vitamins and minerals, including 100% of your daily vitamin C in just one cup!

There are six varieties of mangos that are available all year round!

1. Ataulfo mangos are sweet and creamy
2. Francis mangos are rich, spicy and sweet
3. Haden mangos are rich with aromatic overtones
4. Keitt mangos are sweet and fruity
5. Kent mangos are sweet and rich
6. Tommy Atkins mangos are mild and sweet

No matter which mango variety is your favorite, you can make the ordinary into the extraordinary in no time at all!  “Mangover Your Plate” with easy mango meal makeover tips for turning your usual dishes into something exciting!

How to select a mango:
* To find a ripe mango, squeeze the fruit gently.
* Color isn’t always the best indicator of ripeness.
* A ripe mango will be slightly soft like a peach or avocado.

How to store mangos:
* Keep unripe mangos at room temperature.
* Mangos shouldn’t be refrigerated before they are ripe.
* To speed up ripening, place mangos in a paper bag at room temperature.
* Once ripe, mangos should be moved to the refrigerator, which will slow down the ripening process. Whole, ripe mangos may be stored for up to five days in the refrigerator.
* Mangos may be peeled, cubed and placed in an airtight container in the freezer for up to six months.

How to cut a mango:

Before you cut:

* Always wash the mango before cutting and use a clean knife and cutting board.
* Find the mango’s eye - a marker for the mango’s seed:
   * Stand the mango on your cutting board stem end down and hold.
   * The eye should be looking back at you.

1. Place your knife about ¼-inch from the widest center line and cut down through the  mango.
 * Flip the mango around and repeat this cut on the other side.
 * The resulting ovals of mango flesh are known as the “cheeks.” What’s left in the middle is mostly the mango seed.
2. Cut parallel slices into the mango flesh, being careful not to cut through the skin.
3. Scoop the mango slices out of the mango skin using a spoon.

Once cut, mangos don’t lose their color, and the texture holds up extremely well. Keep slices on hand to upgrade everyday basics!  A few of our favorite ways to use fresh mangos are:

1. Fused in water
2. As an ice cream topping
3. Mixed with vanilla pudding
4. Cubed in our cereal
5. Added to fruit salad
6. Smoothies or milkshakes
